Norwegian creature featurer KRAKEN, directed by Pål Øie and inspired by the legendary deep-sea myth, has secured major international distribution deals. Splendid Film (Germany), Mediawan Rights (France), and Youplanet (Spain) have acquired rights to the highly anticipated film, set for release in late 2025. Promising a pulse-pounding cinematic experience, KRAKEN brings one of folklore’s most fearsome creatures to the big screen.
16 February 2025, Copenhagen – We are thrilled to announce that the highly anticipated Norwegian monster action film KRAKEN, inspired by the legendary deep-sea creature, has secured distribution in key international markets. The film has been acquired by Splendid Film for Germany, Mediawan Rights for France and Youplanet for Spain, bringing its epic adventure to audiences across these regions.
Previously announced sales include North America (Samuel Goldwyn Films) and Latin America (Gussi).

KRAKEN is directed by Pål Øie who has reunited with the producers from his action thriller THE TUNNEL (2019), John Einar Hagen and Einar Loftesnes.
Besides having directed a wide range of short films and documentaries, Pål Øie is known for his horror thriller HIDDEN (2009) and his breakthrough horror adventure DARK WOODS (2003), for which he won the Grand Prize of European Fantasy Film in Silver - Special Mention at Luxembourg International Film Festival in 2004.
The film stars Sara Khorami, particularly known for her role in the Norwegian dramedy NOTHING TO LAUGH ABOUT (2022), who plays alongside Mikkel Bratt Silset (SHADOW OF VICTORY, 2024; BEFOREIGNERS, 2019-21), Ingvild Holthe Bygdnes (THE TUNNEL, 2019), Steinar Klouman Hallert (SICK OF MYSELF, 2022; THELMA, 2017) and young talent Jenny Evensen.
Synopsis
Johanne is a marine biologist who is doing research on a fish farm in Vangsnes, a rural community located by the fjord, when she encounters several strange occurrences. Along with the brutal deaths of two local teenagers, all signs are pointing to the deep fjord; can there be more to the depths than the eye can see?
At the bottom of Norway’s deepest fjord rests a mythical monster as large as a mountain, with a myriad of arms ready to crush and devour anything they can grab.
KRAKEN is directed by Pål Øie and written by Vilde Eide. The film is produced by John Einar Hagen and Einar Loftesnes for Nordisk Film Production AS, in collaboration with Handmade Films in Norwegian Woods, with support from Norwegian Film Institute, Mediefondet Zefyr, Vestnorsk Filmcenter, Business Finland,Turkuu and Tampere, Finland. International Sales are handled by TrustNordisk.
The film is set to release in local cinemas ultimo 2025.
