THE QUIET MIGRATION from TrustNordisk has just been announced as winner at Berlinale 2023, in the FIPRESCI Panorama section. THE QUIET MIGRATION is directed by Malene Choi and is her debut feature. THE QUIET MIGRATION had its world premiere at this year's Berlin International Film Festival 2023.
COPENHAGEN, 25 February 2022 – The 73rd Berlin International Film Festival has today announced THEQUIET MIGRATION as the winner of FIPRESCI. The FIPRESCI is awarded by The international film critics association and the winner is chosen from the Competition program and the Encounters, Panorama and Forum sections. The winner of the FIPRESCI is selected by an expert jury from The international film critics association. THEQUIET MIGRATION has received great reviews from critics and great praise from audiences.
Director Malene Choi comments on the win:
"I feel very honored and I want to thank the jury for this generous recognition
and congratulate the entire team who made this film possible. I’m very grateful and touched - as adoptees we come from a humble beginning not knowing where from or from whom. This film is about how it feels to be a body out of place and about the need to belong"
THE QUIET MIGRATION:
THE QUIET MIGRATION is written and directed by Malene Choi and marks her debut feature after having made the hybrid doc-fiction THE RETURN (2018), which similarly is about transnational adoption, and which had its world premiere at The International Rotterdam Film Festival. THE QUIET MIGRATION has already gained international attention after being selected for the prestigious Torino ScriptLab as well as developed at New Horizon Studio Sources and presented at Discovery at the Gothenburg Film Festival.
Writer/Director Choi elegantly explores the main character's unresolved desire to discover more about his birth and roots in South Korea, blending her keen documentarian eyes with distinctive dreamlike elements to striking effect. The film is produced by Maria Møller Kjeldgaard for Manna Film.
THE QUIET MIGRATION stars young talent Cornelius Won Riedel-Clausen in the lead opposite to Bodil Jørgensen (THE KINGDOM EXODUS, 2022) and Bjarne Henriksen (THE KILLING, 2007).
Managing Director of TrustNordisk, Susan Wendt, comments:
"We are extremely proud that THE QUIET MIGRATION wins the FIBRESCI and want to congratulate Malene Choi on her directorial debut with such an amazing feature and everyone working on this project. To achieve such an honour with a debut feature surely marks a great future for Malene Choi. We can't wait for the global audience to experience this debut feature with a thought-provoking and heartfelt story about transnational adoption."
