TrustNordisk is happy to announce that Jacob Møller’s directorial debut MADAME IDA has been selected for main competition at the Torino Film Festival as part of the "International Features Competition" program.
This means that the Zentropa-produced MADAME IDA will have its world premiere at the 42nd Torino Film Festival, just days before its local release on 2 December.
MADAME IDA is a powerful, poignant period drama about three women from three different generations who, together, attempt to break free from the fates imposed upon them in their longing for a sense of belonging.
Three Generations of Female Talent and the Film's Creative Team
The three main roles are played by three major talents from different generations. Young talent Flora Ofelia Hofmann Lindahl plays the 15-year-old orphan Cecilia. She has recently been seen in Birthday Girl (2024) and As in Heaven (2021) for which she won the Best Actress award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in 2021.Opposite Flora Ofelia Hofmann is Carmen Curlers (2022) and Cry Wolf (2020) star Christine Albeck Børge in the role of Ida. Lastly, we find Karen Lise Mynster as the maid Alma. She is a celebrated actress who has won numerous Danish awards throughout her career.
The creative mind behind MADAME IDA is director Jacob Møller, a graduate of the National Film School of Denmark. When he graduated in 2019, his final project was the experimental short film A Treatise of the Human Animal no. 38: HEARTACHES, a comedic and life-affirming portrayal of human beings and their romantic woes, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in the "Filmmakers of Tomorrow" program.
MADAMA IDA is produced by Charlotte Hjordt for Zentropa. She is currently working on several feature films and TV series. Recently, she co-produced the drama series The Dreamer (2022), which tells the story of the legendary Danish author Karen Blixen.
Synopsis
In the early 1950s, fifteen-year-old Cecilia has become unwillingly pregnant due to a sexual assault by the warden of the orphanage in which she grew up. To conceal the pregnancy, the orphanage decides that Cecilia is to give away her unborn child to Ida, who desperately wants to adopt, and who lives alone with her maid Alma in an old, isolated mansion. Cecilia is sent out to live at the mansion for the duration of her pregnancy and for a time the three women constitute an odd family, where they each find respite for their loneliness, sorrow, and longing. But with the arrival of the baby, the harmonious circumstances suddenly change.
MADAME IDA is a story about longing for love and affection, and about the extreme measures to which we will go, to achieve it.
MADAME IDA is produced by Zentropa Entertainments with support from the Danish Film Institute, New Danish Screen, DR, and the European Union. Scandinavian distribution is handled by Nordisk Film Distribution, with international sales by TrustNordisk.
MADAME IDA is scheduled for local release on 2 December, 2024.
