The Norwegian film won the Audience Award from the US festival’s Global section which ran March 16-20.
Director Yngvild Sve Flikke said: “I’m thrilled and very happy that Ninjababy speaks to the American audience. I’ve gotten such wonderful feedback from people who’ve seen the film at SXSW, both laughing and crying. That really moves me!”
The quirky comedy drama about mixed feelings around pregnancy, screened earlier at the Berlinale’s Generation 14plus programme where it received warm reviews from the international press.
Ninjababy was written by Home Ground’s Johan Fasting, in collaboration with Flikke and novelist/animator Inga H. Sætre, from her own graphic novel Fallteknikk.
The innovative film mixing animation and live action was produced by Yngve Sæther for Motlys, with support from the Norwegian Film Institute and Nordisk Film & TV Fond. The domestic release via Arthaus is now scheduled for May 21.
