Copenhagen, 31 August 2023 – NIGHTWATCH - DEMONS ARE FOREVER by Ole Bornedal has today been officially selected for BFI London Film Festival in the Cult strand section, where it will world premiere.
NIGHTWATCH - DEMONS ARE FOREVER marks the sequel to renowned director Bornedal's original thriller NIGHTWATCH (1994) that became and instant hit, both at home an internationally.
The 1994 classic toured festival Cannes, Toronto and Berlin International Film Festival, and was a huge local success with 465,000 admissions. The widespread fame of the film spawned an American remake of the same name (1997) starring Ewan McGregor and Nick Nolte. Now nearly 30 years later, Bornedal is back with the successor, starring much of the same cast from the original. Bornedal's directorial catalogue includes among others Sundance-selected JUST ANOTHER LOVE STORY (2008) and Danish Oscar shortlist THE SHADOW IN MY EYE (2021).
Reuniting with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Kim Bodnia
A large part of the cast from the original NIGHTWATCH (1994) is back, including Primetime Emmy Award-nominated actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, BAFTA-nominated Kim Bodnia (THE WITCHER, 2021; KILLING EVE, 2018-22; NIGHTWATCH, 1994;) and Ulf Pilgaard (NIGHTWATCH, 1994). Joining them is Paprika Steen (THE CELEBRATION, 1998; THAT TIME OF THE YEAR, 2019), Sonja Richter (THE KEEPER OF LOST CAUSES, 2012) and young talents Fanny Bornedal (THE PURITY OF VENGEANCE, 2018; THE SHADOW IN MY EYE, 2021) and VIKINGS-actor Alex Høgh Andersen (2016-2020).
Synopsis
It is by no coincidence that Emma (22, medical student) has taken the job as the nightwatch in the forensic department. She grew up with her mother, Kalinka, who committed suicide when Emma was 10, and her traumatized apathetic father, Martin. The fatal night the psychopathic inspector Wörmer almost killed Emma's parents before they were saved at the very last minute by their friend Jens marked the family and left a suppressed and unspoken fraction of her parents' past. Since that night they have all been haunted by the memory of the monster, and as a result Emma has been brought up in the suppressed memory, and remaining silence after the event.
Emma decides to investigate what happened in her parents’ past. Upon meeting with Wörmer, Emma wakes him from his coma, and unintentionally initiates a bloody revenge on all of those who sealed Wörmer’s destiny. Emma and Martin are now surrounded by vindictive maniacs whose only motive is revenge.
NIGHTWATCH - DEMONS ARE FOREVER is written and directed by Ole Bornedal and produced by Thomas Heinesen for Nordisk Film Production.
