Swedish director Lukas Moodysson´s latest feature film will be celebrating its World Premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. The world´s oldest international film festival has officially selected Moodysson´s WE ARE THE BEST! to compete in the Orizzonti (Horizons) section.
The prestigious film festiva´s competitive section represents “the most innovative aesthetic and expressive trends in international cinema, showcasing the work of both young and well-established directors.”
Belonging to the more well-established category of filmmakers, Lukas Moodysson has proven himself one of Scandinavia´s most acclaimed auteurs. His debut feature film, the award-winning film FUCKING ÅMÅL (SHOW ME LOVE, 1998) took the cinematic landscape by storm and in 2000 Moodysson once again impressed both audience and critics with TOGETHER, which was also selected for Venice International Film Festival (Cinema del Presente section). Two years later LILYA 4-EVER (2002) followed with a World Premiere in Venice´s Controcorrente section, and Lukas Moodysson´s most recent work MAMMOTH (2009) was selected for Official Competition at Berlin International Film Festival in 2009.
WE ARE THE BEST! is Moodysson's 7th feature and has made a good start on the international market; only two days ago it was announced that Toronto International Film Festival also selected the film for their official 2013-line up.
Based on a graphic novel by Coco Moodysson, WE ARE THE BEST! tells a humourous story about three outsiders in 80's Stockholm - Bobo, Klara and Hedvig. Three 13-year-old girls who roam the streets. Who are brave and tough and strong and weak and confused and weird. Who have to take care of themselves way too early. Who heat fish fingers in the toaster when Mom is at the pub. Who start a punk band without any instruments, even though everybody says that punk is dead.
WE ARE THE BEST! stars newcomers Mira Barkhammar, Mira Grosin and Liv LeMoyne in the main roles as Bobo, Klara and Hedvig. Other key roles are played by David Dencik, Johan Liljemark, Anna Rydgren and Mattias Wiberg. The film is produced by Lars Jönsson for Memfis Film, co-produced by Film I Väst, SVT and Zentropa in co-operation with Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) and with support from the Swedish Film Institute, The Danish Film Institute and Nordisk Film and TV Fond.
The 70th edition of Venice International Film Festival takes place from August 28th to September 7th 2013. Domestic distributor Svensk Filmindustri is releasing WE ARE THE BEST! in October 2013.
