Exclusive: Based on the true story of Denmark’s largest-scale robbery, Frederik Louis Hviid’s heist thriller premieres in the coveted Discovery section of TIFF this year.

The Toronto International Film Festival’s Discovery sidebar is the festival’s launchpad for emerging directors, and just a few in its alumni stable include the likes of Alfonso Cuarón, Yorgos Lanthimos, Christopher Nolan, Barry Jenkins, Maren Ade, and Emma Seligman.

A filmmaker to watch this year is Danish director Frederik Louis Hviid with “The Quiet Ones,” a true-story heist thriller debuting in the Discovery section alongside films like Durga Chew-Bose’s “Bonjour Tristesse” with Chloë Sevigny. “The Quiet Ones” is inspired by a real crime that took place in 2008 amid Europe’s swelling financial crisis, and IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer for the film below.

TIFF’s programming notes on “The Quiet Ones” compare Hviid’s first solo directing feature to crime thrillers from the likes of Jules Dassin, William Friedkin, and Michael Mann. “Working with a larger canvas and benefitting from Anders Frithiof August’s tightly written screenplay — inspired by a real crime in 2008 that netted over U.S. $10 million and lengthy prison sentences for 14 men — Hviid centres the action on

Kasper (Gustav Giese), a charismatic boxer who’s reluctant to acknowledge his true talents lie outside the ring. As he plans the job alongside an enigmatic hardcase played by Reda Kateb, Kasper displays the kind of exacting professionalism that might’ve taken him far in a more legitimate line of work,” TIFF writes.

Here’s the official synopsis: “As the financial crisis hits Europe in 2008, a group of Danish and European men plan to commit the largest robbery ever on Danish soil. ‘The Quiet Ones’ is a suspenseful action drama that depicts a group of extremely tenacious, ambitious, and uncompromising robbers who all share the same ambition: to succeed with the impossible — despite major obstacles, internal conflicts, secret agendas, and personal costs. It is the story of the largest and most spectacular coup in Danish history, and the long, detailed, and risky preparation it took to create a shortcut to greatness and wealth. At whatever cost. Inspired by true events.”
