Sylvia Le Fanu’s debut feature, titled My Eternal Summer, will celebrate its world premiere in the New Directors competition of the upcoming San Sebastián International Film Festival (20-28 September). Later, the picture will be showcased in the First Feature Competition of the BFI London Film Festival (9-20 October), where it will be vying for the Sutherland Award.
Le Fanu is a graduate of the Norwegian Film School, and holds a BA in Film and Media Studies from the University of Copenhagen. She also completed the independent film programme 18 FRAMES in Odense. Le Fanu’s previous shorts Abu Adnan (2017) and Amourteur (2020) have played at festivals such as Clermont-Ferrand, Indy Shorts and Odense.
The script for My Eternal Summer, penned by the helmer herself with Mads Lind Knudsen, follows 15-year-old Fanny and her parents as they retreat to their summer house and embrace familiar routines: reading, swimming and walking. Beneath the quiet simplicity, an unspoken grief lingers – they know it will be her mother’s last summer. As they try to seize the days they have left together, the family navigates the delicate balance between cherishing the present and facing what’s to come.
Kaya Toft Loholt (A Perfectly Normal Family [+]) stars as Fanny, with Maria Rossing (Department Q: A Conspiracy of Faith [+]) and Anders Mossling (The Kingdom) portraying her parents. Jan Bastian Muñoz Marthinsen is attached as the cinematographer, whilst Emma Lagrelius serves as the editor.
My Eternal Summer is being produced by Jeppe Wowk for Adomeit Film with support from New Danish Screen, the Danish Film Institute’s talent development programme. It is co-financed by FilmFyn, DR, Den Vestdanske Filmpulje and the European Union’s Creative Europe – MEDIA programme. Katja Adomeit is the project’s executive producer, and TrustNordisk is in charge of its world sales.
The pic will land in Danish theatres on 30 January 2025.
