A Danish committee set up by the Danish Film Institute and film industry organizations has selected Nikolaj Arce´s historical drama A ROYAL AFFAIR as Denmark´s official entry for the Academy Award´s® Best Foreign Language Film.
A ROYAL AFFAIR worldpremiered at the 62th Berlinale this year, where it won the Silver Bear for Best Script (Nikolaj Arcel, Rasmus Heisterberg) and Best Actor (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard). Opening domestically in March this year, the film went straight to #1 on the B.O. chart and has to date grossed over USD 6millions.
A ROYAL AFFAIR has proved just as strong a success internationally. In UK it made history as the biggest Danish language film of all time with over USD 580.000 in B.O. and in Australia it has to date grossed more than USD 1.6million. Next English-speaking territory to release A ROYAL AFFAIR is US on November 9th with distributor Magnolia on board.A ROYAL AFFAIR has been sold to over 78 countries.
Recently shown in the red-carpet Gala section at Toronto International Film Festival, A ROYAL AFFAIR stars Mads Mikkelsen (THE HUNT, 2012), Alicia Vikander (THE CROWN JEWELS, 2011) and Mikkel Boe Følsgaard along with Trine Dyrholm (LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED, 2012) and David Dencik (CALL GIRL, 2012).
Producing trio of A ROYAL AFFAIR consists of Louise Vesth, Sisse Graum Jørgensen, and Meta Louise Foldager for Zentropa Entertainments. Executive producers are Lars von Trier, Peter Aalbæk Jensen and Peter Garde. Screenplay is written by Rasmus Heisterberg and Nikolaj Arcel, Rasmus Videbæk is director of photography, composers are Gabriel Yared and Cyrille Aufort, editors are Mikkel E.G. Nielsen and Kasper Leick, Niels Sejer is behind production design and Manon Rasmussen behind costumes.
The film is produced by Zentropa Entertainments28 in cooperation with Trollhättan Film AB and Film i Väst in Sweden, Sirena Film in The Czech Republic and Zentropa Entertainments Berlin. The film is also supported by West Danish Film Fund, Swedish Television, Czech Film Commission under Ministerstvo Kultury, MDM Leipzig Film Fund, Nordisk Film & TV-Fond, Eurimages and The Media Programme of the European Union.
A ROYAL AFFAIR is budgeted at €6m and has been supported by The Danish Film Institute and Eurimages. Nordisk Film is domestic distributor, while TrustNordisk handles international sales.
