A ROYAL AFFAIR

The most dramatic love story in Danish history is the affair between King Chr. VII's physician, Johan Struensee, and the English born queen of Denmark, Caroline Mathilda in the early 1770's.
During the past 40 years, several screen adaptations of this emotional chapter in Danish history have been on the drawing board, but it isn´t until now, with Nikolaj Arce´s A ROYAL AFFAIR, that a Danish feature film about one of the country´s most fascinating dramas reaches the silver screen.

Recently it was announced that Academy Award-winner Gabriel Yared will be composing the soundtrack to the A ROYAL AFFAIR together with Cyrille Aufort. Yared, which won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for THE ENGLISH PATIENT (1996), has also composed music for THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY (1999), COLD MOUNTAIN (2003) and BETTY BLUE (1986).

A ROYAL AFFAIR was shot on location in The Czech Republic and Germany. The film is produced by Zentropa Entertainment in coproduction with Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), Film I Väst, SVT, Sirena Film Prauge and the West Danish Film Fund. The film is also supported by The Danish Film Institute, The Swedish Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV-Fond, Ministerstvo Kultury Czech Republic, Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung, EURIMAGES and The Media Programme of the European Union.  A ROYAL AFFAIR is budgeted at €6,4 m and has been supported by The Danish Film Institute and Eurimages with €0.8m and €0.5m, respectively.
